When evaluating a patient for eyelid vs. browlift surgery, it is very important to first check the position of the brow. As we age, the brow often starts to fall, and in many cases this causes the skin of the lid to start to drape over itself. This low brow can also create an impression of fullness and excess skin in the outer part of the upper eyelid. Doing an eyelid surgery in a person with a low brow can actually pull the brow further down, worsening the cosmetic appearance post-operatively. In patients with a low brow, it is imperative to do a surgery to elevate the brow position, usually with an endoscopic browlift. Occasionally, this surgery is all that is needed to improve the appearance of excess skin in the upper lids. If an endoscopic browlift does not achieve the desired result, eyelid surgery (a blepharoplasty) can be performed at the same time to remove any excess skin which remains.

Dr. Martin is announcing that DYSPORT IS HERE!!!
It’s Nurse Mia Weddell here, reporting that, YES!!! Dysport®, a Botulinum A alternative to Botox® from the makers of Restylane®, is now available in Dr. Martin’s Office. Johnson&Johnson has also announced that they will soon be releasing another botulinum toxin named Purtox®. The emergence of alternatives to Botox® should spur a healthy pricing competition that will benefit both patients and physicians alike. For the patient, Dysport® should be slightly less expensive than Botox®.
Dysport® and Botox® are both Botulium A toxins, and therefore have similar mechanisms of action as neuromuscular blocking toxins. Dysport® however has less of a protein load than Botox®. For the patient, this means that Dysport® will result in the formation of fewer antibodies against it. Antibodies are what our bodies use to detect and destroy foreign substances such as the proteins in the injected medications. Hence the assumption is that with fewer antibodies being formed the clinical effects of Dysport® should last longer than those of Botox®. One study suggested that, in a ratio of 3 units of Reloxin to 1 unit of Botox®, the new product showed slightly faster onset and appeared to last longer. It is anticipated that Dysport® should equal the safety and reliability that Botox® has boasted over the years, and is a very welcome addition to Dr. Martin’s cosmetic anti-aging treatments.

As we age, the appearance of our face becomes more lax as we lose collagen and elastic tissue. Even more evident in many people is the loss of facial fat that also occurs, leading to hollow cheeks, temples, lower lids, and an increased number of wrinkles. If you think of your face as a balloon, when we are young, the balloon is fully inflated. With time, the balloon begins to deflate, becoming soft and wrinkled. Continue reading →
When we think of plastic surgery, certainly one of the most common procedures which comes to mind is a facelift. A facelift is a surgical procedure which is used for someone with jowling, deep nasolabial folds and/or marionette lines, or generalized facial laxity. It will give a more uplifted and tighter appearance to the face, helping to bring back the look the patient had many years previously. Continue reading →
Browlift surgery has become one of the most commonly performed procedures in the past several years to help rejuvenate the upper half of the face. As we age, the forehead and brow start to fall, causing the appearance of heaviness to the lids and accentuating the crow’s feet. Many people think that they need a lid surgery to correct this, when they actually need to lift up the brow. Many people also start to develop deep creases in the forehead which is often due to the muscles here trying to help lift up the brow. Surgically elevating the brow can help relieve this muscle over-action and improve the forehead creases. Continue reading →
Restylane® is the most popular injectable filler in the world today, with millions of satisfied patients returning for repeat treatments. This hyaluronic acid-based injectable gel is truly hypoallergenic, and Restylane® usually lasts between 4 and 6 months, and is an excellent filler or filling in lines, plumping up lips, and recontouring sunken areas under the eyes. Schedule your complimentary consultation with Dr. Martin and see if Restylane® can give you the fresher, more youthful look you desire.
Radiesse®is another popular injectable filler for patients who would like to fill their lines, plump their lips, or address areas of minor and even major facial fat loss (lipoatrophy). It is common for people to lose desired facial fat with age, and especially following significant weight loss, after the age of 30. Radiesse® is also used for treating lipoatrophy associated with HIV. For these patients, Radiesse can make a significant and pleasing difference in restoring a healthier appearance. Dr. Martin is pleased to offer Radiesse® as a safe and effective cosmetic enhancement for patients wishing to improve their facial contours and restore lost volume.
Sculptra® is an injectable filler that, over time, helps fill in depressed areas of fat atrophy (loss) in patients with HIV. Unlike most injectable fillers, where the injected substance fills the depressed or insufficiently full areas to improve facial contours, Sculptra® works by actually thickening the skin to restore volume to those areas. Sculptra® results are not immediate, as with many fillers, but in clinical studies, Sculptra® results, once achieved, lasted up to 2 years. No sensitivity test is required with Sculptra® , so that you may be treated without waiting for test results. Patients with severe lipoatrophy may require 3-6 Sculptra® treatments to achieve their desired results. Dr. Martin is pleased to offer Sculptra® as a safe and effective option to HIV patients with lipoatrophy who wish to restore a healthier appearance.
