Juvéderm® is an injectable filler, and the most recent update on the popular hyaluronic acid injectable fillers, such as Restylane® and Perlane®. Hyaluronic acid fillers have been so successful, in part, because they are truly hypoallergenic, particularly compared with bovine collagen fillers, such as Zyplast and Cosmoplast. Juvéderm® contains about 35 percent more crosslinked hyaluronic acid by volume than Restylane®, and works well for nasal-labial folds and cheek enhancement. At the time of this entry, Juvéderm® is the only filler with FDA approval for patients of color. Several years ago a new group of glaucoma medications made with prostaglandin analogues were noted to cause an increase in the length and thickness of the eyelashes. Xalatan and Lumigan are two of the better known in this group of medications. Because of the increase in lash growth, several companies tried to formulate cosmetic products using these active ingredients specifically to cause lash enhancement. There was concern in the ophthalmic community regarding these products since a known side effect of the drops was a darkening of both the skin around the eyes and the iris in patients using the topical preparations. For patients who want to improve their lip lines, I usually recommend either laser resurfacing, to reduce lines and stimulate new collagen, or fillers such as restylane or Juvederm.
