Skin Care

We are all born with smooth, baby-soft skin. As we age, our skin is subject to numerous conditions that change the texture of young beautiful skin. INTRINSIC aging occurs as a consequence of chronological aging. But up to 90% of what we perceive as skin aging is not due to intrinsic aging but to PHOTOAGING which is damage caused to the skin by UVA light. The supporting framework for our skin is made up of collagen and elastin fibers, which keep our skin firm and smooth. The UVA rays penetrate the skin which causes breakdown of the collagen and elastin fibers. Through the years the chronic exposure to UV light causes the photoaging which is characterized by wrinkles, loss of skin tone with laxity, teleangiectasias (small broken blood vessels on the skin), mottled pigmentation, and a coarse, pebbly, rough skin texture. The UVA exposure may also lead to the development of benign growths and skin cancers. Continue reading

After 12 weeks, the group who drank the green tea had greater weight loss, 4.4 lbs. compared with 2 lbs in the control group. The green-tea group also had larger declines in total abdominal fat, subcutaneous abdominal fat and triglycerides. Continue reading

Resveratrol and anti-aging

A recent isuue of Men’s Health had an article about David Sinclair. He is a scientist at Harvard University studying mitochondria, which are responsible for the energy of all the cells in our bodies. Mitochondria work by transforming nutrients that enter cells into supplies of the energy molecule ATP. ATP provides the energy the cell needs to function. Mitochondria sometimes do not work correctly – either due to genetic mutations or due to aging. Continue reading
